Joseph Curran was one of four recipients of the CCNWT Post-Secondary Grant recipient in the 2025-26 school year and ski season.
In his words, here’s how the season went:
I am super grateful to have received the CCNWT post-secondary funding for the 2025-26 ski season. Training in Canmore/Calgary, I had access to some of the best training opportunities in all of Canada including the Canmore Nordic Center, Winsport, Banff, Peter Laugheed, etc.
For this season, I was racing with a new team called Peak Nordiq based out of the Calgary area supporting high level post-secondary U20/U23 athletes. I am stoked to have super supportive coaches and teammates from all over the country that help me focus on my strengths and achieve my goals. Building off of a great season last year, I was able to travel to the Okanagan for the Sovereign Invitational, Monte Sainte Anne for Canadian Nationals and race multiple Alberta Cups in the Canmore/Calgary area.
This year, with the very unpredictable snowfall and conditions we had, I was able to use some of the funding I received form CCNWT to purchase more skis and new poles to diversify my fleet. Also, CCNWT has supported me in getting to and from important races. Travel can often be a big expense and I am super grateful to have been able to travel and race at high caliber races across the country with the rest of my team. Some of my notable results from this past year include 5th in the CCUNC Nationals Relay, and 14th in the Nationals Skate Sprint. As well as attending some super fun training opportunities like the Lake Louise Snow Camp, and the Peter Lougheed Cookie Race.
I look forward to another season of training and hope that I will continue to push myself while continuing to represent the NWT!
