2023 CCNWT Post-Secondary Grant recipient reflects on his season

Cross Country NWT provided funding to Morgan Young in 2023 through the CCNWT Post-Secondary NWT Skiers Grant.

The grant is available to NWT skiers who are pursuing post-secondary education and skiing at specific competitive events. Funding was awarded by a committee following consideration of each application.

For reference, you can find the policy and application form for this year’s grants. Grants from $200 to $2,000 were available.

Below, you can read Morgan’s report.

I am very grateful to Cross Country NWT (CCNWT) for its support when I skied with the
Yellowknife High Performance (HP) Team and this past academic year when I was the
recipient of the postsecondary ski grant.

This past year I attended Nipissing University in North Bay, Ontario and skied with the
varsity team there. One of my former HP coaches, Kevin Durkee, is an alumnus and
highly recommended the program and the school.

The Nipissing ski team consists of 15 skiers, mostly from Ontario. Our team competed
at several Ontario Cup races, the Ontario University Championships in Thunder Bay,
and the National Championships in Gatineau. The CCNWT grant helped offset some of
my equipment costs, race entry fees and travel expenses.

I had an amazing first year at university, gained a lot of race experience and have made
some life-long friends, all thanks to skiing.
